What is Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)?
Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) allows your international customers to choose whether they want to pay in their own currency or in your local currency when making a card payment at your business. The exchange rate is calculated at the time of the transaction, so customers know exactly how much they are paying in their home currency.
What are the benefits of using DCC
- Make your business more attractive to tourists, expats, and international visitors, by letting them pay in a currency they know.
- Provide customers with a transparent overview of service-cost and exchange rate in their own currency.
- Customers will see the exact amount they’ll be charged in real time, removing surprises on their statements and helping you reduce chargebacks.
- The service is completely free to you as a merchant - no extra fees.
How do you activate DCC on your Flatpay device?
- DCC is a free feature that comes activated on all Flatpay terminals.
- Once active, the currency choice will appear as a prompt before completing a sale when an international card is used. Your customers can now select whether to pay in their own, or your national currency.
How does DCC work during a transaction?
- Input the sale on your terminal.
- If 'Tips' are activated, this screen will appear first.
- Customer presents their card.
- If 'Surcharge' is activated, present the screen to the customer.
- If the customer's card is eligible for DCC, the customer will be offered to pay in local or home currency.
- After choosing, the customers enters PIN or signature.
- If DCC was chosen, the printed receipt will contain additional information.
Keep in mind as a merchant using DCC
As a merchant, you and your staff must remain neutral when the DCC prompt appears.
- Never influence or encourage customers toward either currency option.
- When asked questions, provide balanced information without suggesting one choice is better.
- This neutrality is a compliance requirement under Flatpay's Terms & Conditions.
If you wish to deactivate DCC, simply contact our Customer Support Team.
FAQ
- Do I pay any extra fees as a merchant when a customer uses DCC?
No. You only pay your normal flat fee on transactions and do not pay any additional transaction fees on DCC transactions. Settlement always arrives in your local currency. - Will DCC affect my settlement amounts?
No. You always receive settlement in your local currency, regardless of which currency your customer chooses to pay in. - Why don't I see DCC transactions in my Z-reports?
Since your revenue is always settled in local currency, DCC conversions aren't included in Z-reports. You can view all DCC transaction details in the Transaction Details page. - Can I turn off DCC if I don't want to offer it?
Yes. Simply contact our Customer Support Team to deactivate this feature. - Am I allowed to suggest which option the customer should choose?
No. Merchants and staff must remain completely neutral when the DCC prompt appears. Customers must make their currency choice independently. - Where can I find payment details on DCC?
You can find payment details of DCC on the Transaction Details Page in the Portal → applied exchange rate and full DCC details. - How does DCC interact with Surcharge?
If a card qualifies for both Surcharge and DCC, the Surcharge prompt appears first, followed by DCC. Surcharge rules are country-specific and remain unchanged by DCC.
